Celebrating Life and Embracing Death with End-of-Life Doulas

We will be talking about what an End of Life Doula is, share some of the support services provided by Doulas,  and will discuss the benefits to the dying person and their loved ones by having a Doula. We will share our experiences of being present when someone is actively dying and open up for a discussion for everyone to participate in and an opportunity to ask questions and share as a group.

An End of Life Doula is someone who accompanies the dying person and their loved ones through the final months, weeks and days of life by offering non-medical, emotional support and companionship. A Doula will foster a safe and supportive relationship and will start the conversations that will identify the emotional, spiritual and physical wishes for end of life so that when the person is no longer able to express their wishes there is no guessing involved.

Just as a birth doula, or midwife, helps mothers bring their newborns into the world, end of life doulas bring comfort and support to those who are dying. A doula brings a quiet and powerful presence assisting in one of life’s sacred passages. Having such a presence can ease suffering and make the process less frightening for both the person who is dying and for those around them.
